Copywriting is an art that can be mastered by those who have a flair for it. However, a few simple thumb rules will surely help.
Simplicity pays
Whatever maybe the content, it is pointless to confuse the prospective customer with big, difficult words. Do not make the copy look verbose. Simple and crisp writing is the soul good copywriting.
Research
“Begin with the end in mind.” Spend time to understand the target audience for who the content is being written. The ultimate aim is to make an impression on your reader and that too one that lasts. This will never happen unless the writer keeps the reader in mind.
The opening line
“The whole purpose of writing a document is to have the first line read.” The opening line should be simple yet “eye-ball” grabbing, goading the reader to read on.
The winning idea
The centre of the writing should be full of substance and the winning idea should immediately click with the audience.
Write to one person
Though the content is aimed at a group of people, it’s always better to address it to an individual, as its human nature to pay more attention when one is being spoken to individually.
Avoid hyping the product
Do not use flashy adjectives and garish visual aids in a hasty attempt of catching attention. In content writing, the main focus should be to relate with the reader. Certain rules of grammar and professional content can be bent if it makes way for a better understood content.
Let the product talk
Avoid too much talk about the manufacturer or producer. Let the product speak for itself. To support the features one may use the name and credibility of the manufacturer but it shouldn’t overshadow the merchandise at hand.
Pointers and sub headings
There is a greater chance that the reader may never bother to read an entire paragraph in detail. Hence it is always better to use pointers and subheadings when writing content. Also, it allows the reader to find exactly what he/she maybe looking for in the document
Revise
Since kindergarten this rule has been the golden one. Copywriting doesn’t lie outside its realm. Always revise. Be it the writing or the research, it always helps to correct your mistakes and improve.
Do your homework
It’s always good to quote marketing gurus and credible business houses, but be sure to take permission and work around the legalities as most people in this business are extremely defensive about being quoted without prior permission.
And lo and behold! You are ready to do your copywriting effectively.
